Numbers: LJ 3 #USFLIS4380SMS20

The chapter 6 reading from the Social Media Communication textbook   was very similar to the We are data readings. The chapter was titled Social Media Metrics and Analytics, which tells us that the main topic is the numbers involved in social media for marketing. The chapter describes how basically everything done on social media is trackable data. In the We are data  reading, our actions online are also described as data but in a different way. Just as the title says, we are the data, not just the things we do. Our individual clicks collectively categorize us into online data. This data is each person as a whole, each click adds to the person being categorized further. Our categorization doesn't depend on who we physically are, but on what we define ourselves as based on our clicks. Our online presence defines who we are in data, and how we will be organized.  In the textbook reading we aren't considered the data but what we do online is. Each time we like something, vi...

Assignment 3: Time Diary #USFLIS4380SMS20

I tracked my social media usage over the past 4 days, and I saw definite traces of a routine. The platforms I used over the 4 days include Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. I only use social media on my phone, I have used Instagram on my laptop before, but I prefer the app. Over the 4 days, I only used social media on my phone. There was a visible routine of usage in the mornings, afternoons, and evenings. The amount of time spent on the apps changed from day to day. On the first day, I was on social media the least, spending only 58 minutes in total. I went on Instagram for 2 minutes at 10 am, then I went onto Snapchat around 1-2 pm for 26 minutes, and finally, in the evening I spent 30 minutes on TikTok and Instagram combined from 7-8 pm and around 11 pm. The other days went very similar to this but with different amounts of time spent and times logged on were slightly different. On the second and third days, I went on again in the morning for only 2 minutes. Though there is also a pa...

Human Data:lj 2 #USFLIS4380SMS20

I enjoyed the We Are Data reading mainly because of how it explained humans are sortable data. Everything we post makes it easier to sort us into different categories. I had already been more aware recently of what I posted, but readings like this make me extra aware. My mom had always warned me when I was younger about not posting things I shouldn't for future employers. I had always listened, but in the back of my mind, I thought my posts were private so what did it matter. Though the posts are private and not everyone can see them, they are still data that is sorted. Anything posted is data. Being aware of this, even though people may not see your personal posts doesn't mean the data wasn't on the app. Though this isn't necessarily clearly stated it is something to be aware of when posting. Reading the terms and services of whatever media is being used would ultimately tell how ethical it is in taking our data.       The part of the reading that was unethical is ...

Hands-On Assignment 2 #USFLIS4380SMS20

I would define media as a medium for communicating information to the masses and social networking as the act of communicating using social media. I haven't gotten very far into this post and I've already rewritten everything too many times to count. I keep having to rethink my own definitions and what they really mean. I would consider communicating to be direct as in we send words to one another. Though communicating through social media is much simpler, it is just sending someone a post and no words along with it. Communicating using social media could just be posting to tell your followers something. Basically, social media communication isn't always direct one-to-one but sent out for many.     The social networking sites I use are Youtube, Tiktok, Reddit, Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook. I mainly use Instagram and Facebook to scroll or check on family and friends. I don't take part in the communities as much, but I like to be able to see what is goin...

My Usage of Social Media: LJ1

I have been using social media regularly for the past ten years. I first used Facebook, then Instagram, and then Snapchat. I made a Facebook account when I was in 4th grade so I could talk to my camp friends who lived in New York. So originally I used social media for communication mainly but I didn't use it often. I started using Instagram when I was in 6th grade, in 2012. I downloaded the app because my sister had said how cool it was, so I'm not sure if that makes me an early adopter or part of the early majority because the app was released in 2010. When I first started posting I would post with as many hashtags as I could, but now I never add hashtags to my captions unless it's to make a joke. I also don't really use Instagram for the same reasons as I used to. I used to post and see what my friends were posting, but now I don't post often or at all and I just scroll and look at other posts. I also don't look at peers' posts as often as I used to, ...

Welcome to my Blog!

Hello everyone! My name is Rachel Leeds, and I am from Fort Lauderdale Fl. I currently go to USF and live in the Tampa Bay area. I am majoring in Health Science with concentrations in Biology and Health IT. I enjoy being outside and swimming. I love going camping and have been trying to prepare for a hike-in camp trip. I go camping whenever I can with my best friend, and I am currently planning a trip to Georgia's Providence Canyon. I currently work as a lifeguard at USF, but I have experience in retail and I have volunteered at an animal clinic for a short period of time. Currently, my favorite social media platform is Snapchat because it is more personal. I like being able to talk one on one with my friends and see what they are doing that day if they decide to post. This is not my first time creating a blog. In high school, I had to make a blog for an engineering course to document our progress over the class. I do not keep up with that blog as it was specifically...
