Human Data:lj 2 #USFLIS4380SMS20
I enjoyed the We Are Data reading mainly because of how it explained humans are sortable data. Everything we post makes it easier to sort us into different categories. I had already been more aware recently of what I posted, but readings like this make me extra aware. My mom had always warned me when I was younger about not posting things I shouldn't for future employers. I had always listened, but in the back of my mind, I thought my posts were private so what did it matter. Though the posts are private and not everyone can see them, they are still data that is sorted. Anything posted is data. Being aware of this, even though people may not see your personal posts doesn't mean the data wasn't on the app. Though this isn't necessarily clearly stated it is something to be aware of when posting. Reading the terms and services of whatever media is being used would ultimately tell how ethical it is in taking our data.
The part of the reading that was unethical is when it came to celebrities, which was the majority of the reading. Celebrities are considered different than normal people just by the fact of sorting data. The EU's "right to be forgotten" doesn't count for celebrities because they have so much more information on them on the internet. It is a much more difficult task to get rid of all of the information on Taylor Swift from google than it would be to delete me from google. Because of this, celebrities are not part of this right and have a significant lack of privacy. I don't think sorting based on data is necessarily unethical. Currently, healthcare is sorting people based on data to better workflow and quality of care. Using algorithms to sort people can be good but remember that sorting is only based on whatever is input. The input affects the output. Discriminating based on data sorting would be extremely unethical. Would not allowing celebrities the "right to be forgotten" be considered discrimination or is it just unrealistic with our current state of the internet and immense it is.
Hi Rachel, I agree with you that it is unfair that celebrities don't get the same rights as others because of their fame, but I do understand how difficult it would be to erase a lot of information as the numerous information that famous people have. As you said, Taylor Swift is really well-know artist, I can understand how difficult it would be to erase any little information of her, since she actually doesn't have little information she has thousands of people writing about her lif.
